Not really, if you have no ethics and spam forums completely unrelated to gaming in any way shape or form it's SEO poisoning and Google has measures in place to reduce it as much as possible.

As a side note to this it's been a really bad two days as far as keeping this smf pos clean of spam, it really makes smf look bad. This is day two of a very aggressive spam campaign, if it continues I may take this board down.  What's worse is the sparkling brand new version of smf coming, in release candidate currently seems to be no better.

It ain't easy fighting spammers, those bastards are always one step ahead. Well, not this one, he's just an old "not much thought, just post the crap and hope it stays for a while" type. But the new wave of creative "on topic" ones is really bad. They react to different keywords and then post replies that look like the poster missed a point a little, but not as obvious spam. Luckily there are still some giveaways. They don't have problem digging up years old threads, but they'll probably fix that soon. None of their posts is really sensible, all are at least a little strange, but they can improve it. But there's one thing they can't ever hide, the spam link in their signature.

The Are You Human? Anti-Bot Registration Check plugin was deactivated after forum update. I reanbled it. Should getting less with spams.

@Sob, agreed, and that is typically what we get in a way, they just use the signature to spam but never post so it stays under the radar. I think it's what earned us the red flag at siteadvisor. I don't remember how I first discovered it but I had Mario write a script to help monitor it. Search engines also run the profile pages, something they probably shouldn't do.

You know, come to think of it, on Sob's note about the "smart" ones, I think that's what that helpguru.com person (used loosely) is over on the Lounge's board. I actually got a chuckle the other day on one where the sig is "Dell Support." I was thinking if they bought a Dell they need more psychiatric help than yours. I'd dump that account over there if I could.

I have spent a couple hours now going through the bans & member list.
All accounts that fell into one or more bans have been removed.

Going through the ban pages (6 of them) I removed a lot of duplicate stuff and merged things by ISP/Hosting Co. We can ban by name and never get ahead, especially with names like gjufresdfg & lijhytrd. A simple lookup of the IPs via ARIN/APNIC/LACNIC/RIPE showed a clearer picture of things like if it's coming from a server farm and not an ISP.

One thing I do find odd and do not understand, there's 2 accounts where the profile is their website link in the profile. I don't get it other than causing and endless loop in something, lame spiders perhaps. Seeriolojen & Lea Mari were the two accounts. I see no reason for doing such since their not spamming in their signature. Also for some odd reason they do not show up in the cheat script (they should), why I have no idea. I removed those but did not ban or delete account.

Oh such fun. 6 pages of bans are down to 3. I lightened a couple and strengthened a few. Hopefully I didn't kill any real users, I did lots of cross checking to make sure but stuff happens.

@Mario, I put copy of the triggers in the notes area since it took forever to open and view them all. This way it can be seen w/o looking in the ban itself. When you add one, could you do same? You'll see what I mean when you look at the ban list.

but it hard now because i heard in some country they hired real human to register ( bypass all the security ) and then they just sell the account *sigh* i miss early 90's atleast the people at that era have more ethique

@Gregg: Apachelounge's "hlpguru" also has buddy "heavens" and I have no doubts about them. If you check their "extremely helpful" posts, you hardly find any reason for posting those, except for sticking the link at the end.

@perindu: I don't miss early 90's that much. Sure, I had no spam problems back then, but also no Internet at all. Just an old networkless 8-bit computer with 8-inch diskettes and CP/M. It was interesting, but I wouldn't want to go back.

@Perindu, I am trying to stay away from relying on a service. As much as I can tell by looking at zbblock (thank you for pointing it out to me), it looks like it queries stopforumspam.com. I  would prefer the server not having to contact another server. If stopforumspam.com is down, evertime you do something in a forum doing that is going to get real slow since a user has to wait till the timeout. I am not sure but I think it does cache which helps. It does a few other nice things as well so it's not out of the picture completely. I'll discuss it with Mario.

To be honest, the "Are you human ?" on the registration page does a superb job and requires no checking other websites or room in the database. It's not perfect by any means but it keeps the spam at a manageable level, the ban list does the rest and I rarely have to do anything anymore. If anything I'm gaining a nice list of blocks of IP addresses of server farms/hosting companies, those seem to be where the majority of it comes from.

oh i thought it use it own database on our server not query from them..

so it goes to dnsrbl also eh? is there anyway if we can download some database / cached at our site and update only 1 a day

i think once i've see someone design a simple php block script using iblocklist ( cache to our own server ) ( www.myphpscripts.net ) blocklist manager

other script i can think is bot defense / spider trap... but today... theres a human spammer also... they can bypass all the security... just register to spam

the only way i know how to get away from spammer is not allowed your web crawl by search engine 

ah i means end of 90's hehe at least before y2k bugs erm i have fun with few people chatting and yet we don't afraid to being spam and yes maybe i'm a bit old fashion lol

I need to look into zb block more, I only took a quick glance. I did like some of the other stuff it claims to block.
